As a child in the Soviet Union, Amina Figarova loved the piano at first sight. At the age of three, she would arrange her dolls around her as an audience, then play for them. She once confided, "Nobody could stop me. I would sit and play and play." At the ripe age of seven she dabbled in composition, which lead to studying classical concert piano at the Baku Conservatory. As a teen, her focus switched to jazz performance, first at the Rotterdam Conservatory, then the Berklee College of Music in Boston before ultimately being accepted in 1998 into the prestigious Thelonious Monk Jazz Colony in Aspen.

Now with over a dozen discs in her catalog, she stands as a true compositional innovator, experimenting freely with Funk/Fusion, Avant Garde and new perspectives on the post-Bop '50s/'60s Impulse!/Blue Note era. Ms. Figarova arranges for her powerhouse sextet, while playing compelling, artful and heartfelt changes on the urbane, bluesy lyricism originally developed by the likes of Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Her husband, the sensationally talented multi-flutist Bart Platteau, is central to the renowned three horn frontline.

Loved at jazz festivals and clubs all over the world, the Amina Figarova Sextet has graced stages in Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Germany, France, Great Britain, Denmark, Israel, Bahrain, United Arabs Emirates, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, South Africa, Tunisia, Dutch Antilles, Croatia, Italy...

And now The Ellen Theatre.
