for Irving Berlin’s White Christmas

Montana TheatreWorks is holding auditions for the upcoming holiday show, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. At the helm as Director and Choreographer is Roger Castellano, along with Musical Director Derek Bannasch and all the other returning Creative Team from this past summer’s The Music Man. Show dates for white Christmas at The Ellen Theatre in Bozeman are December 5 through December 21, eleven performances in all. Rehearsals begin Saturday, October 24. To help cover gas money and other costs, there is a modest stipend for all cast members.
Note: There are different AUDITION DATES depending on specific roles. Please review all of the following details and then sign up for the appropriate Audition Date. If you are interested in auditioning for both a Principal/Featured Role and for an Ensemble Part, you only need to attend one audition day.

Saturday, August 29 – 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Principal Roles and Featured Parts
Auditions will consist of first a vocal/singing segment and then, later in the day, a dance section. Also, you may be asked to read a scene or two from the script. Please bring a prepared song in the style of the show with sheet music in the correct key for the accompanist. For the dance sequence, we recommend clothes that are comfortable in which to move and some type of dance footwear (Women in dance heels, Men in jazz shoes, tennis shoes, etc.) For your safety, no flip flops, sandals or anything with an open toe will be allowed. For Judy and Phil, please bring tap shoes.
Principal Roles
Bob Wallace (late 20s to early 40s) is the practical, hardworking leader of the “Wallace and Davis” nightclub act. Although a bit cynical, deep down he is a romantic, with a high baritone/tenor vocal range spanning from Bb2 to Ab4. Key songs include: : "White Christmas," "Blue Skies," and "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep." Moves well but singing is his bread and butter.
Betty Haynes (mid-20s to late 30s) is the sensible, classy, and protective older sister of Judy and one-half of "The Haynes Sisters" act. She features a Mezzo-Soprano vocal range spanning from A3 to F5. Betty possesses a protective shell with strong personal principles, and the courage to strike out on her own professionally. A vocal powerhouse, she delivers the emotionally grounded song "Love, You Didn't Do Right By Me," requiring rich vocal control and stage presence. Must move well.
Phil Davis (mid-20s to mid-30s) is a fun-loving, energetic performer with a baritone vocal range spanning from A2 to F4. He serves as the playful and scheming counterpart to his more cautious partner, Bob. A dynamic song-and-dance comic performer, the role of Phil involves strong jazz and tap-dancing skills. (If you can move with rhythm and are willing to learn to tap, this role may be for you.)
Judy Haynes (early 20s to mid-30s) is a vivacious and ambitious performer with an Alto vocal range spanning from G3 to E5. The younger sister of Betty, she has a personality that is flirty, adorable, and charming, yet more ambitious and slightly scheming than her protective older sister. The role features exceptional jazz and tap-dancing skills along with the songs "Sisters," and "The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing."
Featured Parts
General Henry Waverly (late 50s to mid-60s) A retired U.S. Army General, adjusting to civilian life in post-World War II America. Once a powerful leader, he now struggles to run an Inn in Vermont. He remains a man of great principle and dignity. Beneath his curmudgeonly military exterior lies a warm, compassionate man in need of family and love. Except for one line, a non-singing role.
Martha Watson (late 40s to mid-60s) Once a Broadway star, now the general’s housekeeper at the Inn, Martha has a very dry, wry, wisecracking sense of humor. Bighearted but completely unsentimental, she runs the General’s life despite his protestations. She is an irrepressible meddler, but always for what she believes to be the other guy’s best interests. A winning, appealing character-comedienne with a clarion belt voice.
Susan Waverly (9-12 years old to play 9 years old) The General’s granddaughter, Susan is a lovable and outgoing real kid. She is very smart, wise beyond her years, and cares deeply about her grandfather. Once bitten hard by the showbiz bug, she demonstrates everything that is winning in the ultimate child performer. She must have an excellent belt voice and be able to move well.
Ralph Sheldrake (mid to early 40s) Army buddy of Bob and Phil’s, now a major television executive with the Ed Sullivan Show. Fast-talking, New York professional. Baritone.
Ezekiel Foster (mid-40s to late 50s) The ultimate taciturn New Englander, he helps out at the inn and takes life at a very slow pace.
Mike (mid-20s to late 30s) Bob and Phil’s stage manager. He tends to be over- dramatic and completely hysterical, but he gets things done. Never seen without his whistle and clipboard, which he uses to attempt to keep order.

Susan Auditions
The audition will start with a dance section for all, and then - one by one - those auditioning will participate in a vocal/singing segment. Please bring a prepared song with sheet music in the correct key for the accompanist. Finally, you may also be asked to read a scene or two from the script. We recommend that you wear comfortable clothes in which to move. Also, for your safety, no flip flops, sandals or any footwear with an open toe.

Monday, August 31 – 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM
Ensemble Roles
Auditions will consist with everyone first learning a dance routine, followed by a vocal/singing segment. Please bring a prepared song with sheet music in the correct key for the accompanist. For the dance sequence, we recommend clothes that are comfortable to move in and some type of dance footwear (Women in dance heels, Men in jazz shoes, tennis shoes, etc.) For your safety, no flip flops, sandals or anything with an open toe will be allowed. If you have tap shoes, please bring them.
Rita and Rhoda (mid-20s to early 30s) Bob and Phil’s star chorus girls, they are brash, sexy and fun, although perhaps not the smartest. You may be asked to read a brief scene from the script. Must sing, dance, and tap well.
Tessie – Bob and Phil’s extremely competent assistant.
Jimmy – The proprietor of “Jimmy’s Back Room,” a none-too-classy nightclub.
